An ignition wears out from ordinary use. Every turn moves the wafers inside the cylinder a fraction, and after enough years the key no longer aligns them properly. The usual sequence is: the key needs jiggling, then it needs jiggling every time, then one day it does not turn at all.
It is worth diagnosing before buying a key. People routinely pay for a new key when the key was never the problem — the cylinder was. If your spare key has the same trouble as your main key, the ignition is almost certainly the cause.
Before calling, try this: if the key will not turn and the steering wheel has play in it, apply firm pressure to the wheel in the direction it moves while turning the key gently. A locked steering column binds the ignition and is not a fault at all.

Common questions
Can you make a car key if I have lost every key?
Yes — that is our specialty. With no working key, the key is originated from the vehicle's key code and the immobiliser is programmed from scratch. Bring your driver's licence and the vehicle registration so we can confirm ownership. Call with the year, make and model and we will confirm on the phone whether it is a job we complete on site.
Do I need to tow my car to the dealer for a lost key?
In most cases, no. A mobile locksmith with the right equipment can originate a key at the vehicle, so there is no tow and no dealer appointment. There are a small number of makes and model years where the dealer is genuinely the right answer, and we will tell you if yours is one of them rather than take the job and find out.
What do you need from me before you come out?
The year, make and model of the vehicle, and the VIN if you can read it through the base of the windscreen. For a home or business call, the number of locks and the hardware brand if you know it. That is what lets us quote a real range instead of a guess.
What identification do I need for a car key?
A driver's licence and the vehicle registration. If the vehicle is a rental, the rental agreement works in place of the registration. Originating a key to a car is exactly the kind of capability that has to be handled carefully, so this is not negotiable.
